AYSO EXTRA Program

What
AYSO EXTRA program is a separate inter-regional competitive soccer league entering its second year for our Area. Participants must play on a regular fall season team to qualify for participation. The program is designed to provide a more challenging level of play for players who possess the appropriate interest, skills, and abilities. Player experience and individual growth is enhanced through the game of soccer while retaining the AYSO spirit, organization and six philosophies: Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams (balanced through competitive bracketing), Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, and Player Development. Player selection to an EXTRA team is based upon a competitive tryout and assessment conducted by trained and independent evaluators (not the EXTRA coaches).
We are pleased to continue our participation in the AYSO EXTRA Program for the Fall 2011 Season. The coach and player selection process occured in June and July. Burlingame will field one boy’s and one girl’s team in each age divisions U10, U12, and U14
When and Where
EXTRA league games will be played on Sundays concurrent with our Fall AYSO season; participants play with their regular team on Saturdays. Participating local communities include Belmont, Foster City, Millbrae, Redwood City, San Carlos, and San Bruno. Approximately half of the games will be home and the other half away. Practices, once per week, are scheduled on a night that will not conflict with regular fall AYSO practices to enable players to attend both regular and EXTRA practices. There will be at least one weekend tournament in early October (North Peninsula) and/or November or December (possibly Walnut Creek/Davis/ or Redwood City).
Costs
Fees are set to cover incremental costs associated with the EXTRA program (uniforms, fields, etc.)
A few EXTRA details:
- Players will be evaluated by independent evaluators that are not coaches in Burlingame AYSO.
- Players will be evaluated using the National Open Tryout Procedures for AYSO Extra Programs Evaluation criteria include technical skills, tactical skills, functional attacking, and functional defending, assessed in 6 v 6 small sided game stations. There is a separate evaluation for goalkeepers.
- Players who participated in EXTRA program in the past must tryout if they want to try to make an EXTRA team. There will be no preference given based upon past participation.
- The games will be scheduled between roughly September 18 and November 13, except for a possible end of season tournament.
- Players will generally play at least ¾ of each game. No player on an Extra team will play 4 quarters unless every other player that arrives on time to the game has played at least 3 quarters.
- No player will play goal keeper for more than two quarters in any game.
- The number of players on a side will be nine for U10 and eleven for U12 and U14.
- If you have questions about the EXTRA program or you wish to apply to be an EXTRA coach, please contract our EXTRA coach coordinator Doug Solomon
